Send Me Down a Miracle is a beautifully written book for teens by Han Nolan. The novel is set in Alabama and follows the story of Charity Pittman, the 14-year-old daughter of a preacher. When an artist, Adrienne, from New York City moves to the small town, Charity discovers a free-spirited hero, but her father has an entirely different opinion of the woman who tempts the town and his daughter with devil worship. The book is warm and humorous but delves into serious topics around religion and tolerance. Published in the mid-90s, the book is unlikely to be on the radar of modern teens, but themes and characterizations are still relevant, making it the perfect undiscovered gift.
At the start of the novel, Charity’s mom has left to attend a birdcage convention. Birdcages that she’s made dot their home and are constant reminders of her. As the novel unfolds, it becomes clear how much her absence is influencing the actions of Charity’s father. She stays away far longer than the convention, and Charity begins to wonder if her mother is ever coming home. This necklace has a lovely birdcage sterling silver pendant that features a Swarovski crystal.
Charity spends much of the novel sketching. Adrienne encourages Charity’s love of art. You can encourage a similar interest in teens with this professional artist sketching kit, complete with graphite and charcoal pencils and erasers.
