1. What was your favorite part of the book?

2. Who was your favorite character and why? How did your opinion of the characters change over the course of the story?

3. How do you think the characters could have communicated better to avoid the misunderstandings in the story? How do you feel about keeping secrets?

4. What do you think caused Eve’s depression? Could you relate to it? Why do you think Eve improved over the course of the novel?

5. Justine and Boop were very different mothers, and Justine claims her style is an attempt to rectify her own mother’s failures. How much does parenting differ from generation to generation? How much of the difference is specific to those people and how much of it is a cultural shift? How do your own experiences relate?

6. Parents often struggle with finding the line between guiding their children and controlling them. Justine crosses that line. What were the consequences of crossing the line in the book? What about in real life? What advice would you give to parents on how to identify the line?

7. What did you think about Boop’s decision to put Davey in an institution? Did it make you think differently of her? Were you surprised by how differently society treated people with birth defects only decades ago?
